CONSTRUCTION WORKER MISCLASSIFICATION: STAY ON THE IRS' GOOD SIDE

There may be nothing sure but death and taxes,  roofing sheet roll price  but that hasn’t stopped some people from pursuing that great American pastime: avoiding taxes. One of the most common ways businesses use to skip out on paying taxes is to misclassify employees as independent contractors, which happens to be illegal. Worker misclassification is also known as payroll fraud. Sometimes it’s unintentional, but that won’t keep you from getting handed a penalty, so read on to find out how to stay out of trouble. INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS: A DEFINITION Most resources say an independent contractor provides goods or services to another individual or business, often under terms of contract dictating the desired work outcome, but the contractor retains control over how the goods or services are provided. In other words, independent contractors are their own bosses, not subject to an employer’s control except as agreed by contract. Generally, an independent contractor does a specific job or pr

WHAT TYPE OF DOOR DO YOU NEED FOR YOUR METAL BUILDING?

What Type of Door Do You Need for Your Metal Building?  roll former manufacturers There are a lot of reasons to recommend a steel door for your building. Here are just a few: They are lighter in weight than their counterparts made of other materials. You have flexibility in door types; metal doors come in an amazing number of configurations. Like metal buildings, they come in an endless variety of colors and textures. Metal doors are durable, rust-proof, and environmentally friendly. Here is an overview of different types of steel doors. METAL WALK DOORS A metal walk door creates a welcoming entry to your metal building. In buildings where the main opening is very large, a walk door to the side or in another wall can save on utilities if there is a lot of foot traffic. The larger door will not need to be opened to the weather. In high-security areas, a walk door provides an easily protected and observed entry into the building. Walk doors come pre-assembled or knock-down. They have cus

Historic Steel Homes in the U.S.

MILESTONES IN AMERICAN RESIDENTIAL STEEL FRAMING Steel homes are not a new concept.  In fact, the first steel-framed house in the U.S. arrived on the scene in 1929! The Great Chicago Fire originally sparked interest in steel buildings. four photographs of historic homes in the U.S. from 1929 to 1952In 1871, most of Chicago consisted of wooden buildings, homes, sidewalks, streets, and bridges.  On October 8, a fire began near Michael and Catherine O’Leary’s barn.  Driven by drought conditions and high winds, the small fire soon grew to a raging inferno, consuming thousands of wood structures.  Rain finally doused the flames on October 10. Another fire in 1874 destroyed 800 more buildings in the Windy City. In an effort to avoid more such catastrophes, Chicago officials looked for more fire-resistant building materials.  Thus in 1885 the Home Insurance Building in Chicago— the world’s first 10-story structure— used a fire-resistant iron and steel frame. Should You Build with Steel or Concrete?

PART 2: WHICH MATERIAL IS EASIEST ON THE POCKETBOOK AND THE PLANET? Our last blog discussed whether steel or concrete is the best building material for low-rise construction.  It compared the pros and cons of each system in four categories: design, size, availability, and safety. But will a prefab steel system or reinforced concrete structure give you the most bang-for-your-building-buck? stacks of gold coins and a small green plant with the text "Steel vs. Concrete- Costs for the Pocketbook and the Planet"Moreover, is steel or concrete the best choice for the environment? Material Costs CONCRETE:  The price of concrete itself remains relatively stable.  And concrete ingredients are inexpensive and readily available. STEEL:  The greatest secret to steel’s affordability is its strength.  Steel boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any building material.  Therefore, steel creates a stronger building with far less material than concrete.  Less material equals less mater

Proven Technology Today with a Focus on Tomorrow

We hope that you have had a wonderful summer.   roll forming machine manufacturer  As we enter a new season, we want to share some of our technological advances that continue to impact the quality and durability of our metal roofing systems. Our 35-year history allows us to produce metal roofing products with predicted reliability; but that doesn’t keep us from working into the future. Metal Roofing: Centuries Old, Forever New The basics of quality metal roofs have changed very little over time; basics such as how the panels connect to each other and the roof deck. Our flagship product, Rustic Shingle, was introduced by Kaiser Aluminum in 1959. It is perhaps the most tested and proven residential roofing system available today. Though we have enhanced the Rustic Shingle, the basic design and fastening system have not changed at all. Many of our advancements in metal roofing have involved the coatings that are used to protect and beautify the products. And over the years – we’ve made pl

CHALLENGES FACING TODAY’S CONSTRUCTION MANAGERS

Managing construction is a lot like herding cats.  metal stud roll forming machine  Everything you are responsible for is moving in a different direction, and you need to wrestle it back in line. You have to deal with: Workforce and Labor Safety Time constraints Environmental and other changes Many of the challenges are a direct result of construction operations, but others are less direct: legal issues, government regulations, environmental concerns, and socio-political pressure. A successful project meets cost, time, and resource allocation requirements while also meeting quality metrics as the owner defines them. This success depends on managing the many activities required to produce a unique product. Construction project management tries to achieve this goal through “planned expenditure of resources that meet the project’s quality, cost, time, scope, and safety requirements.” As construction manager, project management is one of your many hats. You are in the ring daily, deflectin

THE IMPACT OF FLOOR VIBRATION ON STEEL BUILDINGS

One of the challenges in designing any space for human occupancy  roll forming mill machines  is creating and maintaining a comfortable environment, including vibration reduction in the floor. You may have been sitting at your desk when someone walked down the aisle on the other side of the partition, and you felt every footfall. Floor vibrations can be damaging in other ways. In areas where vibrations can disrupt various types of testing or manufacturing, reducing vibration is crucial for production. As it happens, vibrations in steel buildings are inherently minimized, as steel buildings meet most vibration performance requirements without the need for special modification. WHY STEEL? Demand for buildings that are quickly and easily constructed, have large uninterrupted floor spaces, and remain flexible in final use continues to grow. Steel buildings meet all of those demands with competitive costs. Steel is a lightweight material that can support the same loads as other building mat

Tiny House Roofing

Builders of tiny houses are considering metal roofing as the best option. Metal roofing’s benefits of low weight, high-end beauty, wind resistance, fire safety, and reflective energy efficiency all blend very well with the goals and desires of owners of tiny homes. We have recently worked with a couple of such projects, and even had the opportunity to visit one tiny house under construction. What a great concept that brings one back to simpler times and the necessities of life!  Managing a smaller home must free one up for greater enjoyment in other areas of life. As one owner told us, his hope is to spend more time utilizing public spaces such as parks once he is in his new tiny home. If you’re building a tiny home, we are happy to consult with you and review your plans. One thing to keep in mind is that most residential metal roofs require a 3:12 roof pitch. Additionally, metal roofing can weigh less than a half pound per square foot. Metal roofing can also have recycled content as h

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME!

A steel building and a sandwich shop make the perfect pairing for budding entrepreneurs. So what makes pre-engineered steel buildings and sandwich shops the best idea since sliced bread? The Sandwich Market large sandwich with the text Building a Business with sandwiches and steel buildingsFirst of all, Americans are positively mad for sandwiches.  In fact, Americans consume 300 million sandwiches every day!  That’s almost 92% of the entire U.S. population! Secondly, Americans buy the majority of those bread-stuffed wonders from the nearest sandwich shop or deli, rather than making their own at home. Not only that, but sandwich buyers usually add a drink and chips to their purchase.  According to USA Today, sandwich totals ring up to $11.14 per person on average. And according to the latest food service data, the average sandwich shop brings in revenues nearing $580,000 annually. However, in spite of the number of sandwich lovers today, currently only 15 sandwich shops exist for every

Build with Steel and Avoid Termiticides

WHY METAL BUILDINGS DO NOT NEED CHEMICAL TERMITE TREATMENTS There are only two ways to avoid chemical termite treatments completely: build in Alaska or build with steel for termite proof construction. Alaska is the only state free from termite problems.  (The frigid winters kill any termites that wander into the state.) creepy termites much on wood with text that says "Build with Steel"And no termite can make a meal of steel. Wood is Good—for Termites! Termites feed on wood.  Building with wood extends an open dinner invitation to termites. In lumber-framed structures, there are two ways to try to thwart termites.  The first means building with chemically treated wood.  The second method depends on periodic chemical treatments. Pesticides developed to eliminate termites are called termiticides. Brushing or spraying liquid termiticides on lumber protects it from termites—until it is exposed to flowing water.  Water releases the lumber’s termiticides, contaminating nearby surfa

SHOULD YOU HIRE OR BUY A CRANE FOR YOUR CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS?

There’s nothing like seeing a flock of cranes at a construction site, is there? A crane is the most noticeable piece of equipment at any construction project, signifying to anyone driving by that a building is going up here. No doubt, cranes are critical for transporting materials to different locations on the jobsite and up to the next level of the structure. They are also expensive pieces of equipment; hiring (renting) a crane could be the easiest way to have one working for you. TYPES OF CRANES You have mobile cranes, and you have tower cranes. Mobile cranes, in the U.S. at least, are truck-mounted. (A track-mounted crane is referred to as a crawler crane.) A mobile crane is a self-propelled piece of machinery that can move about your construction site. It has a boom attached directly to the crane carriage and can be deployed quickly, one of the big advantages to mobile cranes. You can hire a mobile crane in almost any size, from an ultra-compact that will fit into a small truck, to

3D PRINTING AND THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: WHAT’S THE POTENTIAL?

3D printing is beginning to enter the mainstream of consumer use, but faster growth is expected in the manufacturing arena, including construction. Architectural firms have been industry early adopters of 3D printing because it is an easy, fast way to create an architectural model. The ability to print a model that can be moved around for visual examination and to explore the design from a variety of perspectives is a boon to the building business. It is so much easier to understand the relationships between shapes and volumes with a solid figure. No matter how sophisticated a 3D rendering is on a computer screen, there is no comparison to looking at a solid object. The rest of the construction industry has been slower to catch on even though 3D printing could eliminate many of the inefficiencies and high costs of building including the long planning cycles and the equipment expense. However, Gartner, an IT research firm, has estimated the compound annual growth of the use of 3D printi

I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosting

HOW TO BUST THOSE GHOSTLY STAINS ON WALLS AND CEILINGS Without warning, odd dark streaks called “ghosting” begin to appear on your walls or ceilings.  Soon, the blemishes grow darker, forming along wall studs or ceiling rafters.  Before long, a creepy outline of the building’s framing starts to appear on the sheetrock. Who you gonna call? interior walls of a light-gauge steel building show outline of studs called ghostingWhat Causes Ghosting? Ghosting is the slow buildup of air-borne dust, dirt, and soot particles on walls or ceilings.  Also known as “ghost stains,” “bridging,” or “thermal tracking,” ghosting creates strange patterns along exterior walls and ceilings. Three things generally cause ghosting to form: Air passing through the building envelope High indoor humidity Electrostatic attraction Inadequate insulation, gaps in the insulation or exteriors, or the absence of a thermal break allows cold winter air to penetrate inside the wall.  Condensation forms, attracting interior

THE POWERFUL QUAKES OF NEW MADRID

Surprisingly, some of the strongest earthquakes to shake the continental United States did not occur in California, but in what is now Missouri. Centered in the area around New Madrid, the series of tremblors ranked as high as 7.9 in magnitude.  That’s the top of the “major” earthquake scale.  (“Great” earthquakes begin at an 8.0 magnitude.) graphic depicting America's strongest earthquakes in New MadridAccording to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) calculations, the New Madrid earthquake that struck February 7, 1812, was 1.995 times the strength of the infamous Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Only Alaska’s major earthquakes have topped the New Madrid earthquakes in intensity. Timeline of the Strongest Earthquakes in New Madrid In 1803, the U.S. purchased 828,000,000 square miles from France.  This vast territory doubled the size of the fledgling country of America.  That Louisiana Purchase included present day Missouri, which was not admitted to the union as a state until 1821
