4 Types of Structural Steel Connections for Steel Building Frames

There are so many types of framing systems and connections for metal buildings. A warehouse requires some specific types of framing to offer the ability to achieve a wide-open floor plan. The idea is to minimize the number of vertical columns on the interior by making solid and strong connections between the roof frame and the perimeter wall framing members. These connections need to be well-designed and strong. Let’s dive into this in a little more detail by discussing frame connections in somewhat technical terms. There’s no need to worry. This is not a dissertation on structural engineering that will leave your head spinning. The intention is to give you the basic terminology and language you will need to discuss metal building framing with your general contractor. 4 Types Of Structural Steel Connections The framing systems of steel buildings are very extensive when it comes to all the parts involved. There are multiple columns and roof rafters. So, how do you actually connect all t

Why Steel is the Best Building Material for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather can cause extreme damage to building structures. From unexpected downpours to tropical storms or hurricanes bringing powerful, sustained winds, extreme weather is a huge threat to all kinds of building structures, no matter what materials are used in their construction. Structural engineers and the industry as a whole are always working to improve structures to better withstand this extreme weather, but there are also a few easy steps you can take to help your buildings last and ensure the safety of any people or property in them. Steel is by far the best choice for building construction. Let’s review how choosing steel and using proper construction methods can help your building or warehouse last in extreme weather. Things To Consider Wind Loads And Building Codes The impact force of wind moving horizontally on the roof, corners, and walls of structures is the wind load. Different geographic locations are in different Wind Exposure areas (labelled B, C, or D). Learning

Secure Your Things with a DIY Storage Locker

Many homeowners consider renting out storage units due to a lack of space in their homes and garages. Growing families, the accumulation of things, and the need to hold on to items that are important but used infrequently all contribute to the necessity for added storage. Secure Your Things with a DIY Storage Locker But storage units don’t come without their disadvantages. Most obviously, they can be very costly. Small units generally run between $40 and $50 per month, and prices get higher based on the amount of space you need. If you want a climate-controlled unit, costs become even steeper. Renting a storage unit also requires that you travel to the storage location, which is inconvenient when you want to access an item. Finally, putting your things in a rental storage unit doesn’t allow you the peace of mind you get when you store your personal belongings on your own property. A Canadian Made Carport in London Ontario

Still having nightmares because of the snow shoveling and scraping from last year? Save yourself the trouble this winter and protect your vehicle with one of our steel carports. They’re so simple to install that you can still get one in before winter. Keith from London Ontario decided to stay a little warmer this winter by erecting one of our steel carports to protect his two vehicles. Here’s what he had to say: The construction went very well. Three of us took just about a day to install the roof structure and the instruction book was very clear and helpful. As promised on the delivery manifesto, we have a healthy amount of nuts and bolts to spare. As you know, the one glitch in all of this was that we received one incorrect component, which fortunately was just a trim piece and not something structural. Shortly after I contacted you, I was phoned by the factory, and we had the correct piece delivered today by courier (took just 3 working days with a weekend in between). All in all, t

Not Your Typical Garage Workshop

A man’s garage workshop is like his own personal man cave. He can keep his tools there, park his favourite cars, trucks and other vehicles in it, and even set up a TV and beer fridge. This is a place to escape, unwind and pass the time working on favourite hobbies. Unfortunately, many rural homes are not built with garages like that of a suburban home. This brings the need for an external garage workshop to be built. Below is a breakdown of some of the key features of a steel garage and how it isn’t your typical garage workshop – in a good way! Design Unlike the garage in a suburban home, an exterior steel garage workshop is significantly larger and taller. This is usually because there is typically more space to build within rural areas, and thus larger buildings become a realistic option. A garage workshop can be  any size, through custom development of length, width and height. You can design any space you’d like! garage workshop Another great aspect of the steel garage workshop des

3 Great Storage Ideas for Winter

Winter seems to creep up too fast. One day it’s summer, the next day you’re raking leaves and getting ready for the first snowfall. This is the time of year when your storage building comes in handy. Below are a few tips to help you get the most out of your storage building, and have you ready for when winter ends and spring arrives! Vehicles & Equipment build storage buildings One of the main reasons people build storage buildings is to store their expensive vehicles and equipment indoors. This is even more important during the winter months. By keeping them inside for the winter you are protecting them from salt, grime and corrosion that is caused by its salty, moist environment. As well, consider changing the oil in your vehicles to a thinner variety, so that it can easily start on a cold winter day. Thicker oil that is left inside your vehicle during the winter will be difficult to turn over in cold weather. You may also wish to drain the gas out of all vehicles and motorized e

The Benefits of Building a Detached Garage

Detached garages don’t get all the credit they deserve. Many homeowners prefer attached garages, particularly in areas where inclement weather discourages them from going outside to get to their vehicles. But detached garages offer much more in the way of design and customization, particularly when they are constructed using steel buildings. And the ability to customize detached garages offers some distinct advantages over their detached counterparts, for example: Detached garages allow you the opportunity to choose where on your property the garage will be located. They can be placed at an angle to the house or even placed further back on your lot, meaning they won’t dominate the façade of your home as many attached garages do. When a garage is attached to the house, it is effectively a permanent fixture in that one area. The ability to utilize the space for another purpose – a side patio for example – is very limited unless you are willing to invest in a costly renovation. Detached

Things to Consider in Building a Storage Shed

Anybody who owns a home knows that it’s very easy to accumulate things. When you buy a home you have plenty of space, but as time goes on that space seems to become less and less adequate. Tools, toys, furniture, miscellaneous items – it all just seems to add up. To alleviate the clutter, some opt to rent a storage facility, but this can be inconvenient as your things aren’t readily accessible. An increasingly popular option is to build a storage shed that you can keep right on your property. Why do people opt for storage sheds? A storage shed is a great storage solution for a few reasons. It’s a one-time long-term investment, so you don’t have to pay the fees associated with renting a unit. Also, it allows you to keep your stuff close and secure on your very own property, so not only is it safe, but also convenient. Finally, building a storage shed allows you to create the structure that best suits your storage needs. Building a storage shed: things to keep in mind It is prudent that

5 Common Mistakes People Make when Constructing a Steel Building

Steel buildings have become a favourite for many, largely because of the durability and longevity of such buildings. Most garages are now made from steel and an increasing number of workshops and commercial constructions are wholly-steel except maybe for windows and ventilations. The versatility and customizability of steel are two other factors that seem to be attracting so many people. However, one thing all steel builders agree on is that steel buildings are best constructed by experts at the trade. It’s not just about welding one metal piece to another or cutting away sections of the sheet to create openings for doors and windows. If you’re doing a DIY project or are a budding steel builder working on your first project, here are 5 common mistakes you should be wary of. Not following steel building codes The first step in building a steel structure should be to obtain a license that allows you to erect the construction at that the desired location. The fact that you’ve seen your ne

Constructing a Steel Building: The Process from Design to Build

The prospect of designing, then building, one of your own steel buildings is intimidating. The process, though, is quite straightforward with steel structures. All you need to build your own garage, workshop or storage shed are a custom design with appropriate drawings, straightforward instructions, and a positive attitude. Steel buildings are made with lightweight steel so they are not quite as heavy as they look. For your steel building, each arch will weigh about 50 pounds. But, you do not have to lift them when constructing your building. So if you were concerned about your back, don’t be. For this steel building project you won’t need master carpentry skills or a strong back. Designing your building Your building is designed with your needs and according to your local building codes. You will receive a building kit, which includes the specifications and instructions for each step of constructing your building. Foundation drawings will be certified and stamped by a Professional Eng

Future Steel Receives Government Grant to Enhance International Market Efforts

In July of this year, Erin O’Toole, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of International Trade, visited Future Steel in Brampton and announced the federal government’s plans to contribute funding of over $120,000 to the CME (Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters).   This funding is part of Canada’s GOA (Global Opportunities for Associations) program that is designed to help create new opportunities in overseas markets for Canadian companies. The CME, as part of the mining sector, is one of the 38 different industry associations receiving a portion of up to a $3 million dollar total contribution the government of Canada is making via the GOA program this year. Future Steel and similar small to medium-sized enterprises depend on their industry sector associations to represent them in foreign countries and this funding will enable them to make new business contacts and connect with clients around the globe. Future Steel has been in the business of fabricating steel buildings for nearly
