How Do You Find the Best Metal Roofing Contractor?

There are many roofing companies in the area. Some may even list metal roofing as a service they provide. However, finding metal roofing contractors who are experienced in metal roofing products can be a challenge. Simply searching “metal roofing installer near me” won’t always give you a quality metal roofer. Is Metal Roofing Their Primary Service? Because asphalt roofing shingles are the primary roofing material in the U.S., most roofers know how to properly install shingles. However, metal roofing installations are quite different and just because a company installs shingles, doesn’t mean they’re metal roofing installers. Look at their website. Do they talk about metal roofing throughout the site, or just as a mention on their general roofing page? If they don’t have several pages dedicated to metal roofing chances are good that metal roofing is either something they do when asked or possibly something they contract out.  Look into the Company More Although not every state or locali

Benefits of a New England Metal Roof

Metal roofing companies often share the benefits of their products. However, depending on where you are in the country, the benefits vary slightly. As a homeowner in New England, a metal roof will have some of the same and some different benefits that a homeowner in Florida has. Here are some of our favorites that apply to a New England metal roof.  New England Metal Roof Longevity Everyone knows that a metal roof lasts longer than an asphalt shingle roof. However, few people realize just how much longer. Depending on the shingles, installation, and maintenance, you may need four to five (or more) asphalt roofs in the same time you’d need just one metal roof. Snow and ice age asphalt roofing quickly. Metal roofing companies who sell and install aluminum, zinc, or copper will tell you that you could need seven asphalt roofs for one zinc or copper roof. Snow Build-Up is Rarely an Issue Metal roofing can withstand greater snowfall than asphalt roofing. If you’ve ever seen a home’s roof co

Pigments, Resins and Carriers Part II

In developing a paint system the appropriate pigments are suspended in a material called a Binder or Resin. Resin binds the pigment particles and forms the smooth and adherent surface that we expect. There are many types of chemistry suitable to prepare paint but only a few can withstand the rigors of roof exposure and the destructive UV rays of the sun. Three types are in widespread use today: Polyester, Polyester Silicone, and Fluropolymer. Let’s take a further look at each of these: Polyester An organic binder, polyesters are moderate price with moderate performance. As an exterior coating, these finishes are typically used on low-demand products such as residential rainware, soffits, fascia, or sometimes siding. Polyesters are often formulated in light colors such as white or beige. The Metal Construction Association (MCA) would rate the best examples of polyester paints as “Standard” meaning they pass 5-year Florida Exposure Fence testing. Do it once, Do it right

I have over 25 years of experience now in the residential metal roofing business. It is hard to believe but it is true. As a result of my experience, many homeowners contact me each week asking me to help them sort out their roofing situations. Many of these cases are very sad stories of folks choosing metal roofing products that were not correct for their home, or installers who did not know what they were doing. I wish so much that I would hear from folks before they make a decision that is not correct for them or their home. The residential metal roofing industry has done a solid job in recent years of educating consumers about our products. More and more homeowners are aware of metal and choosing metal when it comes time for them to make a roofing decision. That sounds good, doesn’t it? After all, much of my life has been devoted to furthering our industry. The problem is that folks are rushing into decisions thinking that all metal roofing products are the same. It isn’t their fau

Lots Of Remodeling Going On Around Here

2007 has seen a well-documented major downturn in the homebuilding industry. This has affected builders and associated industries including many building products manufacturers. But we haven’t felt the downturn here at Classic Metal Roofing Systems! What’s going on? Well, the news is starting to trickle in, even though the media doesn’t always report it. While new construction is down this year, remodeling is UP, UP, UP! Our products here at Classic are used primarily for remodeling. And, in fact, when new construction turns down, we often see more remodeling going on. This year has been no exception. Our metal roofing systems are great for remodeling. They go over most existing roofs, they offer a great way to increase home energy efficiency, and for homeowners who intend to stay in the house they are in, metal roofing is a great investment that frees them from future maintenance costs. And, what’s more? With traditional shingle roofing now documented to be lasting less than 20 years

Colors and Reflectivity

We have had a couple of interesting inquiries recently pertaining to color and reflectivity of metal roofing. One homeowner inquired about the reflectivity and energy efficiency of solid copper roofing. Another homeowner contacted us and asked whether there were any metal roofs that are less shiny than others. The questions are different from each other but yet related. Copper roofing, when it is new, would have reasonably high reflectivity for energy efficiency. However, as it quickly develops a brown and then green patina, that reflectivity is lost. That is not to say, though, that copper roofing cannot be energy efficient. Copper shingles which feature an air gap between the metal and the roof deck have a natural ability to block heat transfer by conductance, keeping homes naturally cooler in warm weather. The other inquiry we had was from a homeowner who has seen lots of mill finish steel roofs go up in the mountain area where they live. They do not like the fact that these roofs c

Projections Strong For Home Improvement Industry

Particularly in today’s “new” economy, people often ask me how the home improvement industry is doing and what I foresee for the future. From my own company’s perspective, I can tell them that we have been blessed to stay quite busy and growing even during the past 12 months. While I know that some segments of the home improvement industry have been negatively impacted by the economy, roofing has generally kept right on going. That tends to be the difference between “luxury” like new windows or siding and “essential” items like roofing. But what I think is most exciting is the prospect of incredible growth in the home improvement industry over the next few years. As a result of changes in the economy, more and more homeowners will be remaining in their existing homes rather than building new. The end result of that will be a huge boom in the remodeling and improving of those existing homes. Products like durable, beautiful, and energy efficient metal roofing will do very well as a resu

Community Involvement Projects

It is a goal of Classic Metal Roofing Systems to do whatever we can to help our community. This is a time of pain and difficulty out in the community unlike what most of us have ever lived. To that end, we want to use this space to feature just three of the initiatives that we are actively involved in at this time. 1) We have been instrumental in the establishment of a local Network For Job Seekers which meets weekly serving those who are unemployed. The goal is to provide support, encouragement, inspiration, and training to job seekers as well as help them make connections which hopefully lead to employment. Most jobs that are being filled these days are being filled through networking and personal connections rather than traditional “help wanted” ads. So far, this organization has been very positively received and impacted nearly 60 job seekers. 2) We are also working with Piqua Compassion Network to help develop a Circles out of Poverty program to serve families here in our hometown

Is A Classic Metal Roof Right For Your Church?

Classic Metal Roofs beautify and protect hundreds if not thousands of churches across the United States and Canada. Our durable metal roofs are chosen on the basis of their durability, beauty, low weight, fire safety, energy efficiency and other benefits. According to Classic president Todd Miller, “We feel very privileged when we have the opportunity to have one of our roofs installed on a church. It makes good financial sense for churches to use lifetime roofing products, ours or competing products, to get themselves out of the roofing business. Instead of spending money to re-roof their facilities every 15 years or so, they can retain those dollars and use them for expanded ministry.” “We believe that stronger and more actively mission-oriented churches not only grow God’s Kingdom but they also lead to stronger communities and a stronger world,” says Todd. “It is really a celebration for us whenever we see a metal roof on a church.” Classic is always looking for unique ways to work

A Decade Later, Classic Roof Is Still A Beauty

Classic Metal Roofing Systems was recently honored with the cover picture and lead story in the October 2010 issue of Coil World magazine. This magazine is devoted to the promotion of quality coatings on metal products. The article features a Classic Metal Roof which was installed ten years ago and featured in Coil World at that time. As a follow-up story, the publication confirmed that the roof is still looking great and protecting like it was when it was new. This is despite being installed on a harsh weather coastal condition. If you’d like a copy of the article, drop an email to tmiller@classicroof.com. Close The Recycling Loop With A Classic Aluminum Roof

In recent years, most people have become more aware of and careful about separating the recycling out of their trash. We all keep our special bin for materials like aluminum, paper, steel, and plastic and we haul that bin out to the curb once a week. But what happens to those materials after we take them to the curb? Aluminum is one of the world’s most widely recycled materials. At Classic Metal Roofing Systems, we give homeowners a choice that allows them to close the recycling loop by purchasing a roof that is 95% (or more) recycled aluminum in content. When you think about it, there really are few major purchases we can make which have such incredibly high recycled content. This makes aluminum roofing a great way for homeowners to promote recycling and make it all be truly environmentally friendly. The Aluminum Association recently released some incredible updated statistics on the state of aluminum recycling. Included in this data is that the aluminum can recycling rate now exceeds
