Home Shows and Finding A Contractor

Spring Home Show season is upon us and we’re hearing of record attendance at many shows. Contractors across the country are telling us that they have huge backlogs and are expecting 2013 to be a very active year with more and more homeowners deciding to renovate and improve their existing homes. If you attend a Home Show this year, we have one big bit of advice – Do not trust your memory! Home shows can be overwhelming and, while it may be easy to think that you will remember exactly which contractor had that “special product” you liked or seemed to offer “knock your socks off” caring service, it can often be very difficult. So, when you’re at the home show, take notes. Ask the contractors you like if they have Facebook pages where you can follow them, and don’t be afraid to ask if they have an e-newsletter service you can sign up for. Many contractors use these as ways to stay in front of their customers and prospects. As soon as you think you can trust your memory, you will find that

Our Visit to the IBHS Research Center

Classic Metal Roofing Systems’ president Todd Miller recently had the opportunity to visit the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety Research Center (IBHS) in Richburg, South Carolina. He was there as part of a visit scheduled by members of the Metal Construction Association (MCA). MCA is the leading trade association promoting metal as part of the building envelope. Miller currently chairs the organization. Miller and others visited the three-year-old $40 million facility to learn more about the advanced testing techniques which have been developed and performed at the center. The purpose is to be able to provide “real world” testing of building materials and how they will perform in wind, hail, rain, and fire events. While there, they learned about the results of past tests performed at the state of the art facility as well as things that are planned for the future. According to Miller, “Visiting the IBHS Research Center was a real treat. We do so as part of our continuing

Halloween may be over but are scary things still lurking inside of your home? This month we take a look at a few things to beware of. Rusted Exhaust Flues. Over a period of years, condensation can cause steel exhaust ducts on furnaces and water heaters to rust. A 10% reduction in the moisture level of your insulation can increase its R Value by 25%. Plumbing Leaks. Water getting to places where it shouldn’t be in your home will likely lead to mold.
