METAL MOULDINGS 101: THE DAHLSTROM BEDROCK

At Dahlstrom, we fabricate only the highest quality metal mouldings to help you create a sleek, elegant atmosphere for any room. We pride ourselves on the rich history of our products. Our oldest designs originate from the industrial era - America’s Big Bang. Even better, Dahlstrom still uses the same tools and manufacturing processes that have been in place since our inception in the early 1900’s. In addition to their historic authenticity, learn why designers choose metal mouldings over wood. Got all that? Good. Now, let’s get started on the basics. TYPES OF MOULDINGS Baseboards Baseboards create a visual break from the horizontal floor to the vertical wall. They perfectly accent the floor design, protect the edges of the room, and create an eye-catching boundary that separates the building’s directional planes. The height of your baseboards is the largest factor in determining their aesthetic appeal: short baseboards can look cheap and unassuming, while taller baseboards lend natura

WHY QUICK-SHIP METAL MOULDINGS ARE AWESOME FOR ARCHITECTS

Did you think roll forming had to take weeks and months to design, set up, and produce a quality product? We thought so, too. BEST METALS FOR EXTERIOR ARCHITECTURE | CORROSION-RESISTANT METALS

The oceanfront is a beautiful but expensive place to live. And as it turns out, it’s also one of the most difficult places to use metal in outdoor architecture.  The salt and moisture of the seaside makes long-lasting construction a challenge. The majority of coastal buildings need maintenance every few decades or, depending on the metal used in their construction, they may need to be completely replaced. And while most metals are resistant to corrosion, they are not immune. Those that are immune to corrosion are typically luxury metals that carry big price tags. As you move further inland, all metals survive longer thanks to lower levels of salt in the environment. It won’t save them from the rain and weather, but they stand a better chance. No matter where you build, your architecture will be exposed to wind, rain, and possibly salt and other elements. Deciding on the best metals for exterior applications can be the difference between a long-lasting tribute to your skill and an ugly,

STEEL DOORS: A HISTORY

With each passing year, more buildings are relying on steel doors. While the door is an assumed feature of a building, its story has developed continually. Result? The steel door -- always a fine upgrade to an industrial, commercial, or even residential building. But let’s look at the millenia-long road we took to reach door utopia: HISTORY OF STEEL DOORS After your ancestors grew tired of cave life, they devised permanent structures complete with openings. Animal pelts helped keep heat inside. But your great-times-a-hundred-grandparents couldn’t keep out the elements or unwanted entrants. Thus began the wooden door many centuries later. Wood was a marked improvement over dead animal parts. Unfortunately, the Great Fire of London showed that door craftsmanship still needed improvement. That terrible inferno of 1666 destroyed most of the city’s buildings and rendered 100,000 citizens homeless. Fire made short work of wooden doors, which had no built-in fire protection. This got the whee

5 TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE AIA ARCHITECTURAL SHOW

Visiting the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018? You’re not alone -- 23,000+ are expected to take over New York City’s Javits Center from June 21-23. As such, it’s easy to get lost (sometimes literally) when trying to make the most of this huge architectural show. Use our five tips to make the most out of your experience in the Big Apple. 5 WAYS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR TRIP TO THE BIG ARCHITECTURAL SHOW The AIA show is in a different city each year, which gives you a chance to view different architecture and meet an ever-changing group of people during your downtime. Because it’s in New York City this year (and specifically Manhattan), there’s an even better chance than ever to see some great sights and brush shoulders with the sharpest minds in architecture. These should be your five priorities for the week: 1. See What’s Trending A’18 promises to turn the Javits Center into a 200,000-sq.-ft. materials playground. More than 800 building product manufacturers will be on hand. While the entir

5 TYPES OF CORROSION YOU (PROBABLY) DON’T KNOW ABOUT

As a design engineer, corrosion is something you’re always watching out for when working with metal. And while you’re likely already familiar with several types of corrosion -- pitting, edge creep, exposure due to damage/scratches, etc. -- there are a lot of lesser-known variations you’d be wise to brush up on. For instance, are you familiar with fretting? (No, not the kind your kids do.) What about flow-assisted corrosion? High-temperature corrosion? There are others that you should definitely be aware of, too. Have a look: (If want a helpful shortcut, click the button below to download a chart featuring key properties of several popular metals.)   5 LITTLE-KNOWN TYPES OF CORROSION Think you know corrosion? Here's a look at some that might impact your next metal project: 1. Fretting When two metal surfaces make contact, usually either through rubbing or gnawing, fretting occurs. Fretting, also commonly referred to as “chafing erosion,” is essentially the gradual wearing down of tw

METAL DOOR FRAME CASING: AVOIDING AESTHETIC FLAWS & 3 OTHER BENEFITS

The status quo isn’t going to advance your designs. Sometimes you need to reassess what’s always been considered "acceptable" and see it for what it is -- kinda ugly. A door casing is a prime example of an opportunity to take the “ugly” and turn it in to something beautiful. What makes a metal door frame casing worth the (easy) installation? METAL DOOR FRAME CASING: A PRIMER There are four key benefits of metal door casing: Attractiveness Ease of installation Uniqueness Fire safety Let's talk about what a “pre-fab” door casing made from metal can do. (We’d love you if your doors themselves were steel too, but wooden doors are acceptable). This type of moulding hangs tightly from the head jamb and snaps solidly into clips attached to the side jambs. VIDEO: WOOD VS. ARCHITECTURAL METAL MOULDINGS PART 2 - SCRAPE TEST

Many architectural projects must back up their beauty with backbone. It’s not enough to create a great design -- it’s got to stand up to wear and tear in a mass-shared space, too.   That’s why this video series attempts to answer, "What is the most durable type of base trim in the industry?" Wood mouldings? Vinyl mouldings? Architectural metal mouldings? We put five materials through an abrasion, or scuffing, test. The goal: How do popular mouldings react to a glancing blow as might occur in a hotel, airport, or other public place? There are plenty of common instances where scraping or scuffing may occur to architectural mouldings. You can probably think of many yourself, but here are a few: Airport corridors and other transportation areas. Lots of foot traffic and suitcases banging around the halls. H
